Chicago weather is spotty, at best. So, when the sun is out, every person is outside, trying to soak up that wonderful dose of vitamin D before it goes away, seemingly never to return again.
If you've ever watched Finding Nemo, we're all a little bit like Dory.
"OHMIGOD it's the SUN!"
Then the next day. "HEY GUYS! The SUN is out!"
For about the first month of actual great weather, we act as though we'd been living under rocks and forgot what that big ball of flames in the sky is.
Every. Single. Day.
It's a gift we're excited about, until it gets hot. Then, we complain. Until it gets cold. Then, we want it back. It's a never-ending cycle. You just kind of have to laugh about it.
It's looking as though May is going to be that month. Finally.
So, it's very appropriate that May is also skin cancer awareness month. On May 23, we kick off Memorial Day weekend (yes, I'll take my drink poolside, thank you very much) and most of us have plans to be outside nearly every moment of that three-day weekend.
May 23 is also "No Fry Day" (Get it Friday - Fry Day? Ha!), an annual event that encourages people to take precautions against skin cancer. The sun is a wonderful thing, but it can also do damage to our bodies when we're over-exposed.
Most skin cancer is preventable by taking simple precautions like wearing SPF 30 or higher sunscreen, wearing protective clothing and avoiding the time of day when UV rays are most intense (10 am - 4 pm).
So, take care of your body. It's the only one you have.
